Professor Barnes is a translational pharmacologist, has been a member of the University of Birmingham Medical School Faculty since 1990, and is a founder member of the Neurotrauma Research Group (http://www.srmrc.nihr.ac.uk). His research spans from cellular and molecular pharmacological mechanisms to assessing drug efficacy in clinical trials. He has generated over 150 research papers – including the most highly cited paper from the University of Birmingham and is recognized as a highly cited researcher. Professor Barnes is Chairman of the IUPHAR Nomenclature Committee for Serotonin Receptors, a Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society and Editor-in-Chief for the international journal Frontiers in Neuropharmacology. Professor Barnes holds the title of Honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne and the University of Siena and in addition to his academic-related positions, he is the Principal Founder of Celentyx Ltd (www.celentyx.com); a pharmaceutical CRO focusing on treatments for diseases involving the immune system.
