Abstract: The launch of a new ‘smart’ product today often involves complexity in multiple dimensions as companies have to deal with patenting strategy that cuts across disciplines such as mechanical design, chemical reactions, new chemical and biological entities (therapeutics) or material properties, as well as smart control. Think about about complex technologies such as medical devices, smart factories, AI-controlled measuring and control techniques, chemical and biological formulations etc.
In this session, after a brief introduction on the basic principles of European patent law and how to acquire a patent, including how the new European Unitary Patent fits into the patenting options, patenting in the field of laboratory automation and screening technology will be discussed. The different types of patent protection relevant to this field, including software patents, will be illustrated through hands-on examples.
